The Secret to Shooting Like LeBron James

OC Rain Basketball | The Secret to Shooting Like LeBron James

On June 19, 2016, LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and the rest the Cleveland Cavaliers became the first team EVER in NBA history to come back from a 3-1 deficit in the NBA finals. They defeated the Golden State Warriors at the Oracle Arena, a place “that proved too much for so many teams.” Just how did they do it? The secret to shooting like LeBron James is not actually a secret. Really, it just takes time, practice, and repetition, just like anything else.

Overcome with emotions, James’ teammates look to him as the MVP, patting him on the back and embracing him with pure joy. In an interview with Doris Burke, James said he had come back to the city of Cleveland a couple of years ago to win them a championship. And he prevailed, coming home to Ohio in absolute triumph.

The King

At 31 years old, LeBron James is one of, if not THE best, basketball player of all time. You don’t need to know about basketball to know about LeBron James. With 3 NBA championship titles now under his belt and known for his triple-doubles, LeBron James is a philanthropist off the court as well as a wicked beast on it. He is known as the king of impossible fade-aways, dunking, blocked shots, and he has one of the highest numbers of assists in all of NBA history. Everything he does seems impossible and a lot of aspiring basketball players look to him to improve their skills, techniques, and basketball IQ. At OC Rain Basketball, we intend to do the same. With that being said, here’s some different sources on the secret to shooting like LeBron James:

First off, there isn’t exactly one way to shoot like LeBron James.  There are plenty of tutorials and websites out there that break down his footwork, his technique, and all of the mechanics behind the shot. Some of these tutorials are very different, so I suggest looking and giving a go at each one to see which one works best.

LeBron’s Shooting Secrets

Here is what I’ve observed from watching James shoot: (insert video here)

  1. LeBron James is a tilt shooter. This is to release the tension in his shoulder and give him more lift. When he shoots, his left foot is slightly ahead of his right, but when he jumps his right foot kicks a little ahead of his left.
  2. He is also a two motion shooter. Therefore, his elbow faces the basket, instead of away from it
  3. A higher release point will help add extra arc that you’ve lost in the shot.
  4. Your pointer finger should be in the middle of the ball when releasing and scoring
  5. Practice, practice practice. You won’t be able to do all of these things in twenty minutes. Practicing over time will help improve your skills, techniques, and mindset.

Footwork, Double-teaming, and Hands

Even though there are many critics to LeBron’s shooting style, James is one of the most idolized basketball players in the entire world, so people look up to him and want to be like him athletic wise. Here’s a step by step website tutorial on how to shoot like LeBron and the techniques he uses such as the famous fade away jumper and the high release. This helps him see the goal easier and prevents blocked shots.

Named MVP in 2009 and in 2010, here is a simple step by step website tutorial on shooting tip and how to shoot like LeBron James. This step by step tutorial includes his footwork, what he does with his shoulders, where he places the ball in his hands, how he jumps straight up, and his follow through.

LeBron uses the art of deception to score, even when he’s not shooting. Therefore, this isn’t exactly a tutorial on how to shoot like him, but on how to draw a double team, something James is infamous for. This step by step website tutorial teaches aspiring basketball players to draw the double team so the player can create an assist for an open man to score.

With LeBron’s tips and the constant practicing and reps, your shooting form, technique, and court sense should improve in no time. Thanks for taking the time to take a look at this and good luck!
